BACKGROUND
Having acquired a taste for ethnic cuisine during the time he worked as a Marketing Manager for a travel company, whilst on a visit to his North Devon family home, George (Biff) Biffen spotted an opportunity to launch a surf-inspired street food van serving a range of dishes from around the world.
He secured a permanent site on the Ocean Pitch campsite in Croyde, supplying food to campsite residents as well as passing holidaymakers and locals with his first main season in 2021.

Over the years Biff has experimented with different food styles including Moroccan, Japanese and Caribbean as well as a range of alpine breakfast dishes. He is also keen to encourage people to sample different foods and is happy to share many of his recipes so they can try them out at home.
The business has quickly gained popularity with surfers and locals alike and Biffen’s Kitchen has become an established feature within the local community and has even had mentions in The Guardian Newspaper and National Geographic!
WORKING WITH ND+
Having developed his plans and launched his business in the somewhat unusual trading conditions following the Covid pandemic, Biff was looking for some form of a sounding board to help bounce ideas around and make sure he had covered all of the bases – in effect, some form of mentoring support.
Our Business Advisor sat down with Biff and conducted an in-depth Business Review discussing his plans and objectives for the business as well as looking at how some of the day-to-day operational aspects were managed. Biff then participated in several follow-up workshop sessions focusing on individual topics where he was able to check his understanding of processes and pick up tips and ideas for driving the business forward.
He was also able to tap into a small grant scheme that enabled him to upgrade the signage for his food van and strengthen his brand image and kerb appeal.
