BACKGROUND
When A.J & C Price first heard about the new SFI scheme – the Sustainable Farming Incentive, an initiative designed to reward farmers for environmentally-friendly practices and replace EU payments post-Brexit – it seemed like a substantial challenge. That’s why they decided to enlist ND+ for a helping hand.
A.J & C Price decided to go to several meetings being held by advisors at ND+. These sessions were specifically designed to help farmers understand the SFI scheme, what opportunities there were for farmers, and navigating the application process. These meetings made the scheme feel more manageable, and they even found that they could make a claim on their small acreage that was being rented out to a sheep dealer.
WORKING WITH ND+
Following the sessions with ND+, A.J & C Price decided to go ahead with a farm visit. During the visit, they found the sward too dense for a herbal lay, so they decided to carry on the same, and claim soil samples, hedge trees, pasture, pond and ditching, and hedge management.
With advice from ND+, they changed the agreement by email from light hedge trimming to cutting back properly each year. The result was a small financial reduction which was easy but slow, and have now received their fourth payment.
The outcome has been financially worthwhile and they continue to manage the land as before.
